What the 7th house means: partners, commitments and opponents

The 7th house is the piece of sky just above the western horizon as the birth happens, the slice about to set. Its cusp is the Descendant, directly opposite the Ascendant. It governs the one across the table: partners, the people a person commits to, and opponents. Libra is its natural sign, Venus its planet, and it is angular.

The sky setting in the west

A house is a one-in-twelve share of the sky measured from the birthplace, starting at the eastern horizon, so the city and the hour of birth together decide it. The 7th begins at the western horizon and reaches up into the evening sky: a planet here at birth is low in the west and goes down within a couple of hours. The Sun reaches the 7th in the late afternoon, in the two hours before it sets.

The houses revolve with the Earth, the full wheel in twenty-four hours, so the 7th depends on the clock; an unknown time makes every house arbitrary, so a 7th drawn from a guessed hour cannot be trusted, as the page on charts without a birth time explains. Every quadrant system puts the Descendant on this cusp and then divides the upper western quarter differently, so the 8th and 9th cusps move while the 7th holds; equal houses keep it too, and whole sign starts the 7th at the sign opposite the rising one. The house systems compared sets out all seven.

The one across the table

The 7th house covers the one across the table: partners, the people a person commits to, and opponents. Marriage is here, and so is the business partner, the lawyer on the other side, the rival who turns up at every tender. What the 1st house is to the self, the 7th is to the other, and it describes the kind of person who keeps ending up opposite.

The Moon and Saturn across the table

A fast planet in this house tells how a person pairs up. Someone whose Moon is in the 7th phones their partner from the supermarket to ask what to buy, and gets the mood of a room by watching one face in it. A slow planet sets the terms of commitment. With Saturn in the 7th, a person reads the contract to the end, takes the opponent more seriously than the ally, and introduces a partner of ten years as a friend.

The 1st house, the self facing it

Opposite the 7th is the 1st, the slice of sky rising in the east as the 7th sets. The other is answered by the self: the way a person arrives, their body, the impression they make first. Across this axis a chart shows who walks in and who is waited for. Planets in the 7th describe a person who is often defined by whoever is sitting opposite.

Questions

What does the 7th house represent in astrology?
The one across the table: partners, the people a person commits to, and opponents. It covers marriage and business partnership, and also the enemy, because both sit opposite and both demand an answer.
Does an empty 7th house mean no relationships?
No. An empty house is common; there are ten planets and twelve houses. The sign on the 7th cusp and the planet ruling it still describe how a person pairs up, and Venus describes it from its own place in the chart.
Is the 7th house the Descendant?
The Descendant is the degree on the western horizon at birth, and most house systems make it the 7th cusp. The house is the sky that continues upward from it.
