What the 8th house means: what is shared and what is owed

The 8th house is the sky of the lower west, above the horizon, where the Sun stands in the afternoon, two to four hours before it sets. It governs what is shared and what is owed: intimacy, other people's money, loss, and what is kept out of sight. Scorpio is its natural sign, Pluto its modern planet and Mars its older one, and it is succedent.

The lower western sky in the afternoon

A house takes a twelfth of what is overhead and underfoot at the place of birth, with the count starting at the east horizon and running through the chart's lowest point and then up the west, so the hour and the place set it together. The 8th is above the horizon on the western side, between the 7th at the horizon and the 9th nearer the top. A planet placed here is visible, if it is dark, in the west, a few hours from setting.

The wheel of houses makes one turn a day with the Earth, which is why a birth hour decides this house and no date can. Quadrant systems split the western quarter between horizon and meridian in different proportions, so the 8th is wider or narrower by system; the house systems compared sets the seven against each other in a table. What a chart without a time can still say, and what it cannot, is set out on the page on charts without a birth time.

Shared, owed and kept out of sight

The 8th house covers what is shared and what is owed: intimacy, other people's money, loss, and what is kept out of sight. The joint account is here, the inheritance, the tax bill, the debt, the sex that means something, the death in the family, the thing a person tells one other person. Where the 2nd is a person's own money, the 8th is money that passes between people and changes them on the way.

Venus and Pluto in the 8th

Fast planets in the 8th show in how things are shared. With Venus in the 8th, a person lends money to a friend and never mentions it again, and finds out a lover's secrets by being told them. The slow planets here show what gets held and lost. With Pluto in the 8th, a person reads the inheritance papers twice, keeps a box of letters unopened for years, and knows to the dollar what is owed to whom.

The 2nd house, one's own purse

Opposite the 8th is the 2nd, under the eastern horizon before dawn. What is shared and owed is answered by what is owned outright: a person's own money, their own things. The 2nd holds; the 8th pools and inherits. With Venus in the 2nd and Pluto in the 8th, a person buys the house outright and still reads the deed for other names.

Questions

What does the 8th house rule in astrology?
What is shared and what is owed: intimacy, other people's money, loss, and what is kept out of sight. Inheritance, debt, joint finances, sex and death all belong here, as the things that pass between people and cannot be taken back.
Is the 8th house about death?
Death is one of its subjects, as a loss that is shared and that transfers what was owned. The house does not time a death and cannot; it describes how a person meets loss and what passes to them through it.
Why does the 8th house have two rulers?
Scorpio is the natural sign here, and it has had Mars as its ruler since antiquity and Pluto since Pluto was found in 1930. Most modern astrologers name both; this site lists Pluto first and keeps Mars in view.
