Venus in astrology: what draws a person and what they find beautiful

Venus is the second planet and the brightest thing in the sky after the Sun and Moon, the morning or evening star. Its orbit lies inside ours, so from here it stays within about forty-seven degrees of the Sun and takes about a year to get around the zodiac. In a birth chart it stands for what draws a person, how they show affection, and what they find beautiful.

The evening star's year

Venus goes around the Sun in 225 days, but seen from Earth it keeps company with the Sun, so a natal Venus sits in the same sign as the Sun or within two of it. It appears as an evening star for about nine months, vanishes behind or in front of the Sun, and comes back as a morning star for about nine months: one cycle of about 584 days, evening star to evening star. Five of those cycles take almost exactly eight years, in which Venus goes around the Sun thirteen times, so it traces a five-pointed figure through the zodiac that repeats within a degree or two.

Its retrograde comes less often than Mercury's: about every nineteen months, for about six weeks, always while it passes between us and the Sun. About one person in fourteen has Venus retrograde at birth.

What draws a person

Three things, and they turn out to be one: what someone is drawn to is what they call beautiful, and how they show affection is by offering it. That is the whole of Venus, and the sign says the taste. A Venus in Taurus buys the heavy coat and the good bread and wears the one sweater for ten years; a Venus in Aquarius is drawn to the person at the party nobody else has worked out, and shows it by arguing with them.

Venus's house, where affection goes

By house, Venus says where the drawing and showing happen. A Venus in the 6th brings pastries to the office on Mondays and keeps the shared spreadsheet pretty; the affection is in the work. A Venus in the 9th falls for the place before the person, and the person is from there. A Venus in the 4th shows love by making the bed with the good sheets when someone is coming to stay.

Today's liking, and the eight-year figure

Venus moves roughly a degree daily when direct, so a Venus contact with a natal planet holds a day or two, and this site reads it in the daily horoscope with the other four fast bodies: liking and ease, today. Like the Sun, it reaches each natal planet roughly once a year and is past within the week. The exception is a retrograde spell, when Venus can pass one natal degree three times in two months and the contact lasts. Every eight years Venus returns to within a degree or two of its natal place, since the whole five-pointed figure repeats then, and astrologers watch that return.

Questions

What does my Venus sign say about love?
It says how a person shows affection and what they are drawn to, which is a part of love and not the whole. The Moon says what they need to feel safe, Mars says how they pursue, and the 7th house says who they end up across the table from. Venus is the taste and the gesture.
Is Venus retrograde rare?
It comes about every nineteen months and lasts about six weeks, so roughly one month in thirteen. Mercury is retrograde far more often. Someone born with Venus retrograde, about one in fourteen, is read as showing affection on their own schedule, often later and in private.
What signs does Venus rule?
Taurus and Libra. Taurus is the side that holds and keeps, the pleasure of things; Libra is the side that pairs and balances, the pleasure of company. Venus's natural houses are the 2nd, what one owns, and the 7th, the partner.
