What the 1st house means: the body and the first impression

The 1st house is the twelfth of the sky that was about to rise over the eastern horizon when a person was born. Its cusp is the Ascendant, the degree rising in the east at the minute of birth, and it governs how that person arrives: the body, the manner, the first impression. Its natural sign is Aries, its planet Mars.

The sky just under the eastern horizon

A house is a twelfth of the sky as seen from the birthplace, counted from the eastern horizon, so where and when a person was born decides the lot. The 1st house is the first slice, the part of the sky that rises in the two hours or so after the birth. Planets there are hidden under the horizon at the moment of birth and come up soon after; the Sun sits here in the last two hours before sunrise.

The houses turn with the Earth, the whole wheel in a day, so the hour of birth decides them, and an hour's error moves every cusp about half a sign. When the hour is lost the houses go with it: the page on charts without a birth time sets out what survives and what does not. The quadrant systems and equal houses all put the 1st cusp at the Ascendant degree but carve the sky between horizon and meridian differently, while whole sign starts the 1st at 0 degrees of the rising sign; the house systems compared sets the seven side by side.

How a person arrives, and the body

The 1st house covers how a person arrives: the body, the way they walk in, the first impression before anyone has said a word. It is the Ascendant's house, which is why the rising sign reads as the manner strangers meet. Whatever is here is on display from the start, in the handshake and the coat.

Mars and Saturn in the 1st

A fast planet here shows in manner. Someone with Mars in the 1st is first through the door and has shaken two hands before the host has turned around. A slow planet here shows in bearing: with Saturn in the 1st, a person stands a little apart at the party, answers a question with a question, and is taken for older than they are until they laugh.

The 7th house answers it

Across the wheel sits the 7th house, the slice of sky that was setting in the west as the 1st rose. Where the 1st is the self arriving, the 7th is whoever sits across the table: the partner, the person committed to, the opponent. Mars in the 1st walks in first; Mars in the 7th picks the argument with whoever is already there. The calculator on this site draws the 1st house at the left of the wheel, starting from the rising degree.

Questions

What does the 1st house represent in astrology?
How a person arrives: the body, the manner, the first impression. Its cusp is the Ascendant, so the rising sign is the sign of the 1st house. Planets in it are visible in the way the person walks into a room.
Is the 1st house the same as the rising sign?
Nearly. The rising sign is the sign on the 1st house cusp, the degree coming up in the east at birth. The 1st house is the span of sky that follows that degree, and it can run into the next sign, so a planet can be in the 1st house and not in the rising sign.
Can the 1st house be found without a birth time?
No. The cusp moves a degree every four minutes, so the time is needed. Without it this site stands noon in for the hour and labels what depends on it, as the page on charts without a birth time explains, and since houses computed from noon are arbitrary, the chart and report leave them out.
