What the 6th house means: work, health and the daily grind

The 6th house is the slice of sky just under the western horizon, the one the Sun occupies in the hour or two after it sets. It governs work as routine, health, the daily grind, and being of use. Virgo is its natural sign, Mercury its planet. Of the six houses below the horizon it is the last, and it is cadent.

Just set in the west

A house is one slice in twelve of the sky over and under the birthplace, numbered from the eastern edge of the horizon, which is why no two places or hours give the same houses. The 6th is the last of the six below the horizon, directly under the western edge. A planet in the 6th at birth has set within the last couple of hours: it was in the sky that evening and has just gone.

Since the Earth's turning carries the wheel through all twelve houses in a day, a chart lacking the hour has no 6th house to speak of; the page on charts without a birth time explains that noon stands in, that the houses built on it are arbitrary, and what is still sound. The quadrant systems cut the quarter between the western horizon and the chart's lowest point differently, which moves the 6th cusp by a few degrees or more; the house systems compared gives each of the seven a line and says what it divides.

Routine, health and being of use

The 6th house covers work as routine, health, the daily grind, and being of use: the job as it is done hour by hour, the body as it is looked after or not, the chores, the appointment, the colleague who needs a hand. It is not the career, which belongs to the 10th, but the Tuesday of it: the dog fed at seven because it is always fed at seven.

Mars and Saturn at the daily grind

Fast planets here set the pace of the routine. With Mars in the 6th, a person clears the inbox before eight, takes the stairs two at a time, and picks a fight with the printer. A slow planet shows what the routine costs. With Saturn in the 6th, a person has the same breakfast for a decade, keeps a list of the lists, and goes to the doctor only when the symptom has a name.

The 12th house, unseen work

Opposite the 6th is the 12th, low in the east just after rising. Work that is seen and counted is answered by work that is not: solitude, what is given with no credit taken, what a person hides from themselves. The 6th is useful in daylight; the 12th does its work with the lights off. Tidying the room after everyone has left is work the 6th would put on a timesheet and the 12th does for nothing.

Questions

What does the 6th house represent?
Work as routine, health, the daily grind and being of use. It is the working day's house and the body's upkeep, including the habits, chores and appointments that fill a week.
Is the 6th house about illness?
It is about health, which includes illness. Traditionally it describes the body's routine and what disturbs it, and the care taken or skipped. It says nothing about a specific disease, and a chart is not a diagnosis.
How do the 6th and 10th houses differ?
The 6th is the work itself, done daily; the 10th is the career, reputation and position the work builds into. A person can have a full 6th and an empty 10th: busy every hour, and not much concerned with being known for it.
