What Scorpio means: the sign that keeps its own counsel
Scorpio is the eighth sign, 210 to 240 degrees along the ecliptic, the middle of northern autumn. Water, fixed, ruled by Mars in the traditional scheme and Pluto in the modern one, opposite Taurus. The Sun is in Scorpio from about October 23 to November 21, and the 8th is its house: what is shared and what is owed.

Eighth sign, in the dark half of autumn
Scorpio is one thirty-degree arc of the Sun's circle, measured like every sign from the equinox in March, and so not the constellation Scorpius, which the Sun now crosses in late November and for only a week; the reason is on the Aries page. It is fixed, the middle sign of autumn, and the second water sign. North of the equator, the Sun is in Scorpio while the nights, already longer than the days, go on lengthening toward the solstice.
What Scorpio does to a planet's manner
Scorpio gives a planet depth and a closed door. The planet's work is done intensely, privately, and all the way; nothing is half-felt and little is said. Mercury in Scorpio asks the one question that matters and listens to the answer twice. Venus in Scorpio shows affection by remembering everything. Jupiter in Scorpio expects more from the thing under the surface, and is generous with secrets kept.
Scorpio in the three main places
At two in the morning in the friend's hospital room, a Scorpio Sun is the one still awake and the one the nurse talks to. Where something real is at stake, the hard conversation or the crisis, it comes into its own; it would sooner find out the worst than be managed, and it does not tell the story afterwards.
A Scorpio Moon takes the feeling somewhere private first and comes back when it is finished with it. The person it is eventually shown to was chosen slowly and is kept for life, and being known entirely by one or two people, and unknown to the rest, is the only arrangement it feels safe in.
Scorpio rising says less than anyone else at the table and remembers more. The gaze stays on the speaker a beat longer than is comfortable, and the stranger leaves with the feeling of having been weighed, with no idea of the result.
Taurus opposite, Mars and Pluto, the 8th
Taurus is the opposite sign: what a person keeps against what is shared and owed, and a Scorpio planet negotiates, all its life, with the Taurus end of that line. Mars is the traditional ruler, its pursuit here covert and total; Pluto, the modern ruler, is what has to be taken apart and remade. The house that answers Scorpio is the 8th: intimacy, other people's money, loss, what is kept out of sight.

Questions
- What dates is Scorpio?
- About October 23 to November 21. The edges are approximate, so a birthday on October 22 or 23, or November 21 or 22, needs the birth time to settle it.
- Is Scorpio ruled by Mars or Pluto?
- Both, depending on the scheme. Mars is the traditional ruler and still the one used for anything that depends on the classical rulerships; Pluto was assigned after its discovery in 1930, and most modern astrologers read it alongside Mars.
- Is Scorpio a water sign?
- Yes, the fixed water sign, with Cancer and Pisces. Water works by feeling, and in Scorpio the feeling is held under pressure and does not easily change.
