What the 5th house means: play, pleasure, children and the audience
The 5th house is the stretch of sky that lies below the western horizon in mid-evening, between sunset and midnight. It governs play, pleasure and making things for the joy of it, children, and the audience a person performs for. Leo is the natural sign on its cusp and the Sun the planet that goes with it, and it is a succedent house.

Under the western horizon by evening
A house is a slice, one of twelve, of the sky from the birthplace, with the count beginning at the eastern horizon and running down under the Earth and up the other side. The 5th is under the Earth on the western side: planets here went down some hours before the birth. The Sun is in this house in mid-evening, roughly two to four hours after it sets.
The whole wheel turns with the Earth once a day, and so the clock, not just the date, sets which planets fall in the 5th. The 5th house covers play, pleasure and making things for the joy of it: the hobby that pays nothing, the game, the romance that is still a game, the thing made on a Sunday for no one. Children sit here, the ones a person has and the one they were. So does the audience: the people a person performs for, and the pleasure of being watched.
Venus and Jupiter at play
A fast planet in the 5th shows in how a person plays. With Venus in the 5th, a person dresses for dinner even at home, flirts with the waiter and the dog, and keeps a sketchbook nobody is allowed to see. Slow planets here show how big the fun gets. With Jupiter in the 5th, a person has a hobby that took over the garage, bets more than the stake, and ends up on stage at the wedding without being asked.
The 11th house and the wider room
Opposite the 5th is the 11th, high in the eastern sky on a morning. Play is answered by the group: friends, causes, the future built in company. The 5th performs for the room; the 11th is the room, the house of the friends and allies in the seats.
