What Aquarius means: the sign that stands a step outside

Aquarius is the eleventh sign, from 300 to 330 degrees of the zodiac, in the depth of northern winter. Air, fixed, ruled by Saturn, with Uranus as the modern co-ruler, opposite Leo. The Sun is in Aquarius from about January 20 to February 18, with the 11th house as its own: friends, groups, causes, the future worked toward with others.

The eleventh twelfth of the circle

Aquarius, like the rest, is laid off from the equinox point, which is why a late-January Sun is in Aquarius by sign while it travels against the stars of Capricornus; the Aries page says why. It is the last of the air signs and the last fixed sign, the one in the middle of winter, when the cold has settled in. The Sun's dates in Aquarius are approximate to a day.

A planet in Aquarius steps back

Aquarius gives a planet distance and a principle. The planet's function is carried out coolly, for the group as much as for the person, and in a way that nobody else in the family does it. Mercury in Aquarius says the odd thing that turns out to be right in ten years. Venus in Aquarius is drawn to the friend first and the lover second. Mars in Aquarius goes after the cause and forgets to go after the raise.

Aquarius in the three places asked about most

An Aquarius Sun knows two hundred people by first name and has been to the homes of six. It is for the group with a purpose, the committee or the friends who have met every Thursday for eleven years, and it sits slightly to the side of the group, taking the minutes and voting against the chair.

An Aquarius Moon thinks the feeling through and is faintly embarrassed by it in the meantime. Room to be alone inside a relationship is the condition of its staying, and the people it is safest with are the ones who ask how it is doing once a day and not twice.

Aquarius rising talks to the stranger as an equal from the first word, whatever their age or rank, and wears one thing that does not match the rest of the room on purpose. It takes the stranger's offhand remark seriously, and twenty minutes later the two of them are still on the remark, names not yet exchanged.

Leo opposite, Saturn and Uranus, the 11th

Leo is the sign opposite Aquarius: the lone figure in the spotlight against the crowd it belongs to, and an Aquarius planet is read against whatever occupies Leo. Saturn is the traditional ruler, which accounts for the sign's reserve and its fixed principles; Uranus, added in the modern era, carries what a generation broke with and where a person is the odd one. The house that matches is the 11th: friends, groups, causes.

Questions

What are the Aquarius dates?
About January 20 to February 18. The boundaries are not fixed to the calendar, so a birthday on January 19 or 20, or February 18 or 19, is settled only by the hour of birth.
Is Aquarius ruled by Saturn or Uranus?
Both, in different schemes. Saturn is the older ruler, and the sign's reserve, its fixed principles and its long memory come from there; Uranus was added after its discovery in 1781 and carries the sign's break with convention. Many astrologers read both.
Is Aquarius a water sign?
No. The water bearer is the picture, but Aquarius is air, like Gemini and Libra: ideas, exchange, the group. The water signs are Cancer, Scorpio and Pisces.
