Uranus in astrology: the planet of a generation

Uranus is the seventh planet, an ice giant four times the Earth's width, found by telescope in 1781, the first planet discovered in recorded history. Its orbit takes about eighty-four years, about seven years in each sign, so everyone born across a seven-year span shares a Uranus sign. Astrologers read it for what a cohort broke with, and where a person is the odd one.

Seven years per sign makes a cohort

At eighty-four years to the orbit, Uranus covers about four degrees a year, seven years or thereabouts for each sign. Everyone born in those seven years has Uranus in the same sign, which is why Uranus by sign is read as generational: it describes a cohort, not a person. The site's readings say so in the entry itself and keep the sign entry short. Each year Uranus is retrograde for about five months, so around two people in five are born with it retrograde, and the fact is barely read.

What a cohort broke with

By sign, Uranus is the first half of its domain: the thing a whole generation treated as optional that the one before had treated as given. Uranus in Libra, the late 1960s into the mid 1970s, is a cohort that redrew what a marriage had to look like; Uranus in Sagittarius, the 1980s, a cohort that treats a foreign country as a normal place to live. Nobody in the cohort chose this; it is the water they grew up in.

By house, Uranus is personal

The house changes with the birth time and place, so a Uranus house is one person's, and the site reads it in full. That is the second half of the domain: where this person is the odd one. A Uranus in the 2nd earns money in a way the family cannot explain at dinner and keeps it in three currencies; a Uranus in the 6th has had nine jobs and a different desk at each, and the chair is always wrong; a Uranus in the 7th marries someone the friends did not see coming and is still married. The house is where the person refuses the usual arrangement.

Transits that run for years

Uranus belongs to the slow group in the transit reading here, with Jupiter, Saturn, Neptune and Pluto. A transiting Uranus aspect lasts a year or more, exact three times across the retrograde loop, and a natal house holds transiting Uranus for about seven years. The reading shows the person mid-act while a routine is being broken, in the present tense.

Uranus never gets back to where it started within most lives (that takes eighty-four years), but it reaches the opposite point at about forty-two, the Uranus opposition, the mid-life transit shared by everyone of an age, and squares its own place near twenty-one and sixty-three.

Questions

Why is my Uranus sign the same as everyone I went to school with?
Because Uranus needs about seven years for each sign, so a whole school intake shares it. That is why astrology reads Uranus by sign as describing a generation, not one person. The house, which depends on the birth hour and the birthplace, is the personal part.
What does Uranus rule?
Aquarius, in the modern rulerships adopted after Uranus was discovered; before that, Saturn ruled Aquarius alone, and some astrologers still read both. The 11th is its natural house: friends, groups and causes, the future worked toward with others.
What is the Uranus opposition?
Transiting Uranus reaching the point opposite its natal place, which happens around age forty to forty-two for everyone. It is read as the mid-life stage in which a person breaks with something they had settled for, and the reading describes what they are doing in that stretch.
