What Cancer means in astrology: the sign that keeps house
Cancer is the fourth sign, beginning at the June solstice, ninety degrees past the March equinox. Water, cardinal, ruled by the Moon, opposite Capricorn. The Sun is in Cancer from about June 21 to July 22, the start of northern summer, and the sign corresponds to the 4th house: home, family and the private self.

The sign that begins at the solstice
Zero degrees Cancer is where the Sun reaches its farthest north, the longest day in the northern hemisphere. The sign is the thirty-degree arc after it, and like all the signs it is counted from the equinox and not from the constellation; see the Aries page for why the two have slipped apart. Cancer is cardinal, the first sign of its season, and the first of the water signs.
Planets in Cancer hold on
Cancer wraps a planet in a shell and gives it a memory. Whatever the planet does, it does protectively, by feel, and it keeps what it has done: nothing is forgotten, least of all a kindness or a slight. Mercury in Cancer remembers the exact words from years ago. Venus in Cancer shows affection by feeding someone. Mars in Cancer defends before it attacks, and the attack, when it comes, is sideways.
Cancer as a Sun, a Moon, a horizon
The spare room is made up before the visit is confirmed. A Cancer Sun is doing what it is for when the door is shut and the right people are inside it, and it knows, without asking, where each of them is sleeping tonight.
The Moon rules Cancer, so a Cancer Moon is the Moon in its own sign. Feeling arrives in tides and goes out the same way, slowly; in the known kitchen, with a familiar voice in the next room and a blanket that has been washed a hundred times, it goes out faster. Hurt is held for a long while and rarely mentioned.
Cancer rising answers a stranger's question with a shorter one and takes the seat with its back to the wall. The warmth is real and it comes second, after the room has been judged, as a cup of tea put down beside someone who had not asked for one.
Capricorn opposite, the Moon, the 4th house
Capricorn stands across the wheel: home and the private self at one end, career and public standing at the far end; a planet in Cancer is pulled toward whatever sits in Capricorn. The Moon rules the sign, which is why Cancer and the Moon are described in nearly the same words: how feeling settles and what it takes to feel safe. The 4th house, home and family, is the house that answers Cancer.

Questions
- What are the Cancer dates?
- About June 21 to July 22. The sign begins at the June solstice, and the solstice date varies from year to year, so a June 20, 21 or 22 birthday needs a chart to settle which sign the Sun was in.
- Is Cancer a water sign?
- It is, and it comes first of the three, with Scorpio and Pisces. Water signs work by feeling, and Cancer, being cardinal as well, acts on the feeling: it is the one that gets up and makes the soup.
- Does the Moon rule Cancer?
- It does, in both the traditional and the modern scheme. That is why the sign's description and the Moon's overlap so much, and why a Cancer Moon is read as the Moon in the sign where it is most at home.
