Jupiter in astrology: the twelve-year planet of more
Jupiter is the largest planet, gas eleven times the Earth's width, with more mass than all the other planets together. It takes about twelve years to go around the Sun, so it stays about a year in a sign and is back where it started around every twelfth birthday. Its domain is where a person expects more, where they are given it, and what they are generous with.

A year per sign, four months backward
Jupiter's orbit takes 11.9 years, so it moves about thirty degrees, one sign, in a year. Each year the Earth overtakes it from the inside, and for about four months Jupiter appears to back up through ten degrees or so before resuming. That means the moving Jupiter spends part of every year retrograde, and about one person in three is born with Jupiter retrograde, which is common enough that it is read lightly.
Where a person expects more
Expecting more, being given it and handing it out go together: the place where someone assumes it is going to work out is the place others hand them things, and the place they hand things back. By sign, Jupiter says the manner of the expecting. A Jupiter in Cancer orders for the table and makes sure there is too much; a Jupiter in Capricorn expects the promotion, works as if it were already granted, and talks about it that way.
The house Jupiter enlarges
By house, Jupiter says where the more arrives. A Jupiter in the 2nd has a drawer of gift cards and lends money without writing it down; a Jupiter in the 3rd knows everyone on the street and has a spare key to three houses; a Jupiter in the 6th takes on the extra project and the extra desk and is somehow not tired. The house shows where the hand is open.
The quickest of the slow transits
Jupiter is the quickest of the five slow planets, the ones the transit reading here covers, with Saturn, Uranus, Neptune and Pluto behind it. A Jupiter aspect to something natal stays within orb for weeks, and the yearly loop can make it exact three times across eight or nine months. Jupiter's stay in one natal house is about a year, which is the stretch the transit reading describes.
Around twelve, twenty-four, thirty-six and so on, Jupiter comes back to its natal place: the Jupiter return, a stage everyone of an age passes through at the same time, which is why a whole year group gets read for the same return at once.

Questions
- Is Jupiter the lucky planet?
- In astrology it is the planet of more: where a person expects abundance and is handed it. "Lucky" is the old shorthand. In a chart it points to the part of life where a person is generous and expects generosity back, and the sign says in what manner.
- How long does Jupiter stay in a sign?
- About a year, with a four-month retrograde loop inside it. Because the loop can carry Jupiter back across a sign boundary, a sign can get it twice: a few months, then a return visit after the retrograde. The exact dates vary with each cycle.
- What is a Jupiter return?
- Jupiter coming back to the degree it held at birth, every eleven years and ten months or so: near twelve, twenty-four, thirty-six, forty-eight, sixty. Everyone born the same year has theirs in the same season, so it reads as a shared stage as much as a personal transit.
