Astrology basics · The twelve houses
What the 3rd house means: siblings, neighbors and daily talk
The 3rd house is the third division of sky from the eastern horizon, the stretch the Sun crosses in the hours after midnight. It governs the near world: siblings, neighbors, errands, the short drive, the daily back-and-forth of talk. Gemini and Mercury are its natural sign and planet, and it is the first of the cadent houses.

Where the Sun is after midnight
A house is the whole sky, the half above the birthplace and the half beneath it, cut in twelve and numbered from where the ecliptic meets the horizon in the east. The 3rd is below ground, between the 2nd and the lowest point of the chart. A planet in this house at birth set some hours before and is on its way back up to the east.
The hour matters because the houses wheel round with the turning Earth, the full circle in a day. The quadrant systems divide the quarter from the eastern horizon down to the chart's lowest point in different proportions, which is what moves the 2nd and 3rd cusps; the seven house systems compared sets out the choice. Without a time the 3rd cannot be found at all: the page on charts without a birth time explains that houses computed from a stand-in hour are arbitrary.
The near world of errands and talk
The 3rd house covers the near world: siblings, neighbors, errands, the daily back-and-forth of talk. It is the school run and the group chat, the cousin who phones, the shop at the corner, the language a person speaks without thinking. Reading and writing sit here as part of that traffic, the note on the counter and the postcard from the cousin, not as a subject of study, which is the 9th's.
Mercury and Jupiter in the 3rd
A quick planet here shows in the texture of a day. With Mercury in the 3rd, a person answers a message while reading the next one, knows the back streets, and keeps three conversations going at the bus stop. Slow planets show in the scale of the near world. With Jupiter in the 3rd, a person has a sibling in every city, treats a trip across town as an outing, and comes back from the store with a story and no milk.
The 9th house, far instead of near
Opposite the 3rd is the 9th, high in the west, the early-afternoon Sun's place. The near world is answered by the far one: travel, study, belief, the view from far off. The 3rd knows the neighborhood by heart; the 9th wants to know what the neighborhood is for. An atlas open on the kitchen table, with the local paper under it, is the whole axis on one table.

Questions
- What does the 3rd house rule?
- The near world: siblings, neighbors, errands and daily talk. It covers short journeys, the reading and writing of everyday messages, and the way a person handles the ordinary traffic of conversation.
- Why is the 3rd house about siblings?
- Siblings are the first people met as equals, the first daily back-and-forth. The house covers that kind of relationship, side by side and unchosen, and extends it to cousins, neighbors and classmates.
- Does the 3rd house need an exact birth time?
- Yes. The houses complete a turn every day, so an hour is needed; two hours of error can move a planet out of the 3rd altogether.
