What the 10th house means: career, reputation and authority

The 10th house is the top of the chart, the highest the zodiac reaches over the birthplace, which the Sun holds in the hours before noon. Its cusp is the Midheaven in every quadrant system. It governs career, reputation, authority: what a person is known for. In the natural chart Capricorn falls here, Saturn's sign, and the house is angular.

The top of the sky at noon

Each house takes in a twelfth of the heavens over the town of birth, counted from where the zodiac rises in the east, down beneath the Earth and up again to the meridian, so place and hour decide it together. The 10th sits where the meridian meets the zodiac overhead: planets here are as high as they get that day, and the Sun occupies the 10th from mid-morning until noon. It is the most public part of the sky, the part a whole town is looking at.

The clock decides this house because the Earth carries the wheel round once a day, and the Midheaven moves about one degree each four minutes. The five quadrant systems, Placidus among them, put the Midheaven on the 10th cusp and differ in how the risen sky on either side of it is divided; the house systems compared sets them out. Whole sign houses set the 10th by the rising sign, and equal houses begin it 270 degrees on from the rising degree, so in both the Midheaven can fall in the 9th or the 11th. For a chart with no time the Midheaven cannot be placed; the page on charts without a birth time explains what remains readable without it and what is lost.

Career, reputation and what is known

The 10th house covers career, reputation, authority: what a person is known for. The job title is here, the boss and the being the boss, the name in the paper, the line under the name on a conference badge. It is not the daily work, which the 6th holds, but what the work adds up to in other people's eyes.

Mars and Saturn near the Midheaven

In the 10th a fast planet shows in the pursuit of position. With Mars in the 10th, a person applies for the job above the one advertised, and is the first to speak in a room of superiors. Slow planets here carry the weight of reputation. With Saturn in the 10th, a person takes the long way to the title, signs their full name, and is handed responsibility at every job before being asked whether they want it.

The 4th house, the private floor

Opposite the 10th is the 4th, the floor of the chart under the birthplace, the Sun's place at midnight. The public self finds its answer in the private one: home, family, the self behind a shut door. The Midheaven and the IC are two ends of one line, so what a person is known for and where they go to be unknown are fixed together.

Questions

What does the 10th house mean in astrology?
Career, reputation and authority: what a person is known for. It covers the profession, the public standing, and the position held over others: the sum of the work as other people see it.
Is the Midheaven the same as the 10th house?
The Midheaven is the degree at the top of the chart; in Placidus, Koch and the other quadrant systems it is the 10th cusp. In whole sign houses the 10th is the tenth sign from the rising sign, and in equal houses it begins 270 degrees from the rising degree, so in either the Midheaven can fall in the 9th or 11th.
Can I know my 10th house without a birth time?
Not reliably. The Midheaven moves through the whole zodiac in a day, so a date alone leaves it anywhere. The page on charts without a birth time explains what survives the missing hour, the planets by sign, and what does not: the rising sign, the houses and sometimes the Moon.
